First let me tell why you should know these things.
Most of the time our customers demand that they want a site which looks similar to a specific site. They also tell us about the changes they want us to make in it. If you are a developer you will know how much time it takes to create a whole new theme for WordPress script.
First thing we do is check the site in which our customer has interest in. Most of the time we find that exact or similar theme is already available online for buying. We just buy it for them and make changes they want in it. Really a time saver and we also tell our customer about it. We tell them because our charges for setup and creating a whole new theme are different.

How to know which WordPress theme is used on a site?
First make sure that it is a WordPress site by trying to open wp-admin panel or just view the source of the website. On WordPress site, there is plenty of wp-(stuff) in the source. After confirming you can try the following ways to detect.

Automatic Way:
There are several websites on which you can just enter the link of the wordpress site and it will tell you the name of the theme its writer, version and other theme related stuff. You can google wordpress theme detector and you will have various options i have also added a link below.

Manual Way:
The sites who detect the wp theme for you actually see the css comment describing it. The css file in the theme are mostly named with Style.css so you just have to find it.
You have to visit the site and open the source code. In source code just find theme. I have attached an image below so you can understand how it will look like.
We have found the style.css link by just finding theme folder. Just Ctrl+F and enter themes in the search tab. Some times you do not have to open the css file.
The folder name tells you the name of theme and you can google it. But if that is a custom theme or if theme name is edited google will not be helpful.
So go step ahead and open the style.css
To see the css file just go to your browser enter the link you found in the source code. Make sure it is the complete link you found otherwise it will not show what you are looking for. So for the one we have found now looks like below and just open the source to view the information about the theme.

When you will open this link it will tell you Theme Name, Uri, Description at the start and the theme detecting sites just use this information to tell you the names of the theme. Professionals use this way because with this they will not only have the name of the theme but also the Css coding which they can add or edit later for changes in there sites or atleast understand the concept of the developer. Those who want to do it quickly and do not know css coding can use the wordpress theme detecting sites.
Also you can see the screenshot of the theme. It is the image that is shown in the Themes wordpress panel and also beside the theme information in Auto Wp theme detectors. As you already have found the theme folder what you have to do is just remove style.css at the end from the link and add screenshot.png for example to see mine the link will be as below.
